Kevin: It is now September, and I regret the lag in reading your post and larning about your Mom. What a wonderful story you have given to us all. Our Mom's and Dad's can never be replaced, and we had better all know that, now. When they are gone fr…

What year did you graduate?
1976
...then went to Auburn, went to UAB, got married way too young, had two wonderful kids, went to UAB some more, got divorced way too late, married Denise Sandlin, the love of my life, 18 months later and made family soup with my two kids and her three. The youngest and last remaining at home is almost 21.

I stumbled into a career in graphic arts almost thirty years ago, and there I remain. By title I am "Production and Technology Manager" of Communication Arts, Inc., a printing and graphics firm on Birmingham's southside. The translation of the title is "if nobody else will do it, Kevin will, and if it's broke, Kevin will fix it."

I've continued to play music... guitar, banjo, mandolin, and human voice, mostly. Some samples of it are in the playlist, and when you hear it, you'll see why I still have to work for a living. The first three tracks are part of my latest project, "It's All My Fault"; you can hear and find out more at www.myspace.com/tunesbykevin.

I Love You, Too.

It’s been a little over a year since I first introduced you to my Momma.

“Dear Momma” described the onset of her dementia, followed by her leukemia diagnosis in “The Not-So-Long Goodbye.” Writing is a form of self-medication for me these days, and sharing the situation with all of you helped me gain some valuable perspective.

More importantly, the comments and encouragement I received from so many of you touched me deeply, and helped restore my faith in the essential goodness of my fellow m

Left And Right

Lately I seem to be listing to the right.

This is not a conscious decision on my part, any more than breathing. It has become a biological necessity.

It started with a sharp pain in the femoral triangle region of my left hip whenever I walked uphill or up stairs. In the three months since onset, it has progressed to severe pain all the way from my lower back to my knee whenever I put weight on my left leg. I haven’t been reduced to crutches yet, but I can’t get around without a cane.

My fathe… Continue

The Search For Litafatchee

In the early 19th Century, the New Madrid earthquake struck the eastern United States, shaking the very hills to their foundations and making the Father of Waters, the mighty Mississippi, run backwards for a time. This made quite an impression on the Indians, and one faction of Creeks took it as a Sign from the Great Spirit that it was time for the White Man to Pay Up. They massacred several hundred Alabamians in a fierce uprising, prompting the dispatch of General and soon-to-be-President Andre… Continue

The Silence Of The Geese

There are things you take when you go fishing.

Certain accoutrements are mandatory – your rods and reels, hooks and lines, worms and weights, and a tackle box that looks like a condensed version of the Bass Pro Shop, bristling with plastic, wood and metal imitations of every bug and slug under the sun.

Knives and clippers, pliers and stringers… you wear your lucky overalls so you have enough pocket space for all these things and more. Peanut butter crackers and Vienna sausage and pork skins, j… Continue

The Slap Heard 'Round The World

It just happened. Steve didn’t cause it, and the fish sure didn’t. I don’t even think it was my fault, since I was possessed by an irresistible entity of unknown origin at the time. I was on the outside looking in at my own misbehavior.

The campsite juked and jumped well into the wee hours, and the moonshine flowed like the mountain stream it came from. Friday night is the best night at a bluegrass festival, because everybody’s full of energy, everybody’s got fresh strings, and none of the tune… Continue

Hey Kevin, If I remember correctly, you've had your surgery by now. Just wanted to touch base with you and tell you that I hope your recovery is going well. Take care, Richard

ha ha ha..... Yeah, that's funny that your granddaughter was covertly filming you. Ya gotta be careful what you say and do these days. Everybody's carrying camera phones and such... too easy to leave "evidence" LOL Remember to put your best side forward. ha ha

Thanks Kevin for the birthday wishes. 50 doesn't seem so bad after all and a beautiful sunrise it was this morning for this old man!

I have been enjoying your stories and appreciate you sharing your creativity with us; it adds spice to life! Thanks for sharing.

Yeah, they did "Rider" segueing outta "China Cat"...I'm email you a link to the setlist. You kinda hit it on the head avout transcending good and bad, just being strange. Minus?outside the old mental associations to the original band(which I tried to do....managed a few times),I'd put it down as a real fine rock and roll show.....Good lights as always too.

I haven't heard the Garcia/Grisman you were talking about...but I have the Grateful Dawg movie w/them doing "Thrill is Gone"...Got the Pizza Tapes? That's probably my "contemplative background audio".

Yeahboyhowdy,Ma & 'em is excited about you guys playin' for 'em again. Wish I could be there.

Man,I wanna see that movie..Is it the pure sleaze it sounds like?

Thought about you fleetingly this last Saturday night whilst at a Dead show with 14,000 Yankees in Worcester (pronounced "Woostah" by the natives)...when I hear "I Know You Rider", a small part of my backbrain hears it as one of your old bands. The Dead w/o Jerry is kinda strange, but it was a pretty good time...wish ya coulda been here. Was a blast to hear "One More Saturday Night" ON a Saturday night.

I'm glad you got the print and hope it arrived in good condition.

Our grandson is doing pretty well. He had some problems early on that caused him to spend a few days in the hospital, but he is doing better now. He's growing fast and developing some personality. Thanks for asking.
