Band Member in High School.
Picture of me and my grandchildren.
After high school I attended Jeff State and then the University of Alabama. During that time I worked in radio for WDJC, WCRT and WAYE in Birmingham. In Tuscaloosa I was the night jock at WNPT which was a blast...top 40 radio in a college town.
I got married in January of 1985 and my first managment job in radio. I became the general manager of WVRT (Now WTID 101.7) in Tuscaloosa. Old equipment and no money...heck I had to climb the 200 foot tower and help install the antenna.
My wife and I had two children, Ashley and Joshua.
I moved back to Birmingham in 1987 and went to work for my father-in-law who owns America's Thrift Stores. I hated it, but it was a good job doing good work. During that time I still worked in radio at a number of stations - WVOK 690 (OLDIES), WYDE (CHRISTIAN) and WLTB 99.5 (SOFT ROCK). I was at 99.5 the day before ROCK 99.5 was launched. They were pulling the music out of the room and were moving the studio while I was on the air. Oh yeah, I was told not to come back the next day...that's how most jocks are let go.
I continued in the thrift store world in B'ham for another three years. My wife and I had Tiffany in 1989.
After I divorced in 1991, I moved to Atlanta and continued in the thrift store industry for non-profit organizations. I was transferred to Louisville, KY and then to Boston. I also worked in radio part time in Atlanta and Kentucky.
In 1994 I had enough of the non-profilt world, call a friend in Bham and told him I wanted back in radio. He was working at a station no one knew about...WJOX.
I went there as a sales rep and in 1997 I became the program director.
Sports Radio 690 WJOX was everything you might have heard it was. We created a monster station that dominated radio in Bham (and it still does). I worked with professionals (as their boss) like Herb Winches, Matt Coulter, Scott Griffin, Wimp Sanderson, Sonny Smith, John Ed Willoughby, Doug Layton and more personalities than I can mention. One day I would like to write a book about all the different coaches, players and stars I met during that time.
I also worked on the side at 107.7 The X, Rock 99.5 and WYSF 94.5. Early on I was the traffic reporter (in the air from a small plane) for morning drive shows like Rick & Bubba, Mason & Dixon, NBC 13, FOX 6, KISS 98.7 and most of the stations on the dail. I even received an Associated Press Award for coverage of the bombing of the women's clinic on the Southside. Those reports made it to CNN.
In 1996, I was blessed with my daughter Cameron. She lives with her mother in Louisville KY. She loves computers and art. Dislikes boys for now.
In 1998, I married Robin Key of Jasper. We met while she worked for a local advertising agency. Robin truly brought stability to my life and has been my compass ever since.
I left WJOX in 2003, worked in different jobs in media before heading to Panama City Beach. That is a great place to work in radio. I worked for WPFM 107.9, WRBA 95.3, WASJ 105.1, WAKT 103.5. Ever been in a hurricane?...I stayed in a radio station during two of them...next time I'm leaving with everyone else.
I returned to Bham in 2005 and started working for CBS 42 and then WTTO/WABM in sales.
In 2006 Robin launched Riley Media, a full service advertising agency. Radio and television is where most her work goes. I coordinate the creative for her. I joined her full time in March of 2008.
Robin and I live in Gardendale with two cats and two black labs.
Brent, it has been forever! I hardly ever get on here but I do enjoy catching up with everyone. I left Hueytown 2 months after graduation and have only been back a few times. Loved reading what all you have done and where you have been and looking at your pictures. Grandkids? wow, our oldest son is married but not grandkids yet.
Brent
Great to hear from you. Life is good and since it looks like c/o 82 may be getting together in Feb maybe we can catch. I'll try not to bore you with travel stories! Of course if you get me talking about my travels I can't make any promises!
Hey Brent!! It's has been ages! I can't believe your a grandfather!!! That's crazy! I was so sorry to hear of your dad's passing. Your family, the Morans and Moons have always been such good friends with mine!
So glad to see you are doing well! Your mom must be excited to have you living closer to home! Keep in Touch...BTW, Melinda is on here too!
Hi Brent!
Long time no see! I would have never thought the children in the picture were grandkids - no way! My mom kept me updated over the years with your radio and TV exploits. She always thought you had a kind, friendly voice. It's great to see what everyone is doing these days.
