I lived in Va Mines during the Sixties. I still have family there. When did everyone else live there? Where? I lived on what's called today Coke Oven Road but it looked MUCH better--CLEANER--when I lived there.

She was PATIENCE personified! When I would miss Ms. Stoker's bus, I'd catch Ms. Rainey's.

I rode Ms. Rainey's bus and always thought she was a good driver despite all the noise we made.

Thought I'd better join da group to represent the McCombs clan...

Like Renee we were all over the old mines, swimining underwater in the flooded water treatment basement, jumping off the roof into the outside vat of the water treatment building, sledding down the slate dump, etc.

We expanded and used the Lick Creek swimming holes, usually joined by some of the Parks / Scoggins bunch. It was great playing football next to the old graveyard and roaming the dirt roads on bikes and horses. Hunting the hills and hollows with friends and all of our dogs beat playing inside, hands-down!

I am an old VM girl. I was raised by my grandparents on what is now called Coke Oven Rd.

I remember going to the old mines and roaming through the old builings, sliding down the slate dump, looking for fossils in the rock dump across from the old bath house, cleaning old brick with my grandpa to build flower beds and bar-b-que pits....and that just during the summer.

My grandpa was the water inspector there during the 60s after the mines closed. I remember when a storm would come up, he'd take us all the the old water treatment house for shelter. That's where we were in 1966 when that tornado came through and tore the camp up.

Remeber the blackberry patches and the wild plum trees...and the old beaver dam?
