What a hoot! I don't even remember if I was an officer, I don't think so....but yes, I do remember the orange neon that didn't have to be washed. I really liked those badges, would have liked to have kept them!

Lori, it seems like we had the white belts and silver badges our 5th grade yea,r then in our sixth grade year, we progressed to the orange neon / nylon belts (they were better because they didn't have to be washed). Ironically enough, Debbie and I were cleaning out some closets at my Mom's and found the article in the Bessemer News of when the Safety Patrols elected officers (1972). Deb and I both were Sgt's our sixth grade year. We had a good laugh.

We wore white belts and had silver badges - and by then, we girls were manning the outside intersections too. I loved those flags! And drivers were courteous - hope they are now. That was a lot of fun. But I think we had to turn in our badges b/c I didn't get to keep mine.

I was a Safety Patrol way back in the day about 1962. In the 5th grade Mrs. Waltz told me to see her after school and told me she had chosen me to be a Safety Patrol. Back then girls only worked at the doors we did'nt get to work outside. But thats ok especially on those rainy days. Our group got to go to Washington DC in the sixth grade. I have great memories of those years gone by. Today I have a granddaughter in the 5th grade at NHES and she is a Safety Patrol. She could'nt wait to call and tell me. I lived in the house across the street from the school that sat back off the property. Those were the days my friends. Be Blessed

1967-1968- During these sexist days the girls manned the halls and entrances. The guys were on post 1 (up from the school toward Hueytown Rd), post 2 (in front of the school), post 3 (up on Circle Dr) and post 4 (behind the school). We were scheduled to go to Washington in May 1968 but with the political unrest didnt make it. We did tour the Bessemer City Jail. Wow. It was fun making out the patrol schedules. I was lucky enough to be chosen captain and had a blue badge. However an innocent act involving Dawn Odom was misconstrued by a teacher and I was relieved of my title. Mrs Reeves later apologized to me and said she had made a big mistake. Randy Price, red badge, had a similar fate and was demoted also. What a scandal we caused. Those were fun days. Did we taint the orange vest and white belt?

Oh.my.god. I can' t believe I actually belong to such a rarefied group. We actually went to Washington, D.C. my "senior" year. Are there any survivors of that group out there?

We are just too cute in this picture Phil! I loved Safety Patrol. I had a green badge which was a Sargent. Those were the days!
