...Thought I'd re-animate this group page. At walmart.com check out the ZVUE Journey 1GB MP3 Player that comes preloaded with 22 Journey songs, 11 new and 11 classic. And for the latest Journey news just google "band journey" or like that, and you will find plenty to read. ...KC

The latest Journey singer is from the Phillipines, if I read correctly. See band site: journeymusic.com

My family is now a genuine 3 generation Journey family. My great niece got married Saturday and the song played at the unity candle was Journey's "Open Arms".

They found the asian singer on the internet. He was singing to support his family. He was from a 3rd world country although I can not remember which country it was now...

Hey Robin. Hope you and your family are all well. Funny story....my husband was in Walmart's music section and heard what he thought sounded just like Steve Perry. He said he looked and it was a video of an Asian man singing and he thought it was the real deal. I haven't seen him yet but I've got to check it out. He must be the new lead singer for the group???

Kevin, I went to see Lynard Skynard last time they were at Oak Mountain. It was a beautiful tribute to the band members who were killed in the plane crash. They did not even attempt to say it was the orginal band members. Then they rocked out.

PS: Showing my age but before the programs you listed there was on called Shindig on Saturday mornings. That is where I saw Sonny and Cher for the first time.

As everyone who reads this probably already knows, Journey began in the early 1970's when members of Santana's band decided to form their own band. They did ok with vocalist Robert Fleishman (yes, like the margerine) but manager Herbie Herbert had another vocalist in mind named Steve Perry. With Perry onboard the band began to get more attention and more FM airplay, beginning with "Wheel In The Sky" in 1978, if I remember correctly. In the days before MTV (and for many of us, before cable tv!) there were at least 5 popular music programs that aired at night at least once a week: The Midnite Special, Don Kirshner's Rock Concert, Soundstage, Austin City Limits, and In Concert. It was on Don Kirshner's show that I first saw Journey in the spring of 1978. Their lineup at that time was: Steve Perry, Neil Schon, Greg Rolie, Ross Valory, and Ansley Dunbar. This lineup lasted until about 1980 when Rolie and Dunbar left and were replaced by Jonathan Cain and Steve Smith. 1981's "Escape" had the band in top form and the tour had sellout dates everywhere. I have a vivid recollection of the Birmingham show at the BJCC which was one of the first I had seen with a "flown" sound system, suspended from rigging points from the venue's ceiling so as to allow maximum view of the stage from most seating locations, including those behind the stage.
It was getting close to showtime when a large character shuffeled his way to centerstage and looked the stage over making sure all areas were acceptable and then stepped up to the microphone. This fellow was the aforementioned manager Herbie Herbert, who said unto the audience, "Hey! Just thought I'd let you all know that this show is the first sold out show for 1981 in this venue!" HUGE roar from the crowd, and he spoke a minute or so longer about the specifics of the stage, then declared it was SHOWTIME! What a lot of people didn't know about Journey was the fact that the guy who mixed their studio recordings also mixed their live in concert sound - Kevin Elson. It was like listening to their LP's/tapes, with just enough grit and inflections to keep it all from sounding TOO polished. Kevin Elson was the live sound engineer for the 1970's-era Lynyrd Skynyrd, and survived the band's tragic Oct. 20, 1977 plane crash that killed Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines, Cassie Gaines, road manager Dean Kilpatrick and the two "pilots". In 1983 Journey continued this era of mega-sales and sold out shows but after that year's tour there was a change in the band's lineup with longtime bassist Ross Valory taking a break and being replace by Randy Jackson, known post-2K for his role as an American Idol judge. After 1987 interest in Journey tapered off with the Hair Band and Grunge eras dominating the airwaves, and in 1996 just before a tour Steve Perry incurred a hip injury and rather than wait for him to heal properly the rest of the band just found a "look-alike, sound alike" vocalist and toured without him. And for that reason I haven't paid attention to Journey since. Ditto for Styx and, um, "Lynyrd Skynyrd". See more about Journey at wikipedia.com .

My husband knows how much I LOVE JOURNEY! He was very excited to tell me they were coming to town August 9th until I told him that was the night of his HHS 35th Reunion, which he would never miss. I told him since Steve Perry's not with them, "they're not the same!" Also, my 17 yr. old son says "THEY ROCK!" Timeless.
