2.5 hours from home in Douglasville, GA - suburb of Atlanta. But I lived in Gainesville, FL for three years before moving here two years ago - was about 8 hours from home and lived in South Florida before that for a year and that was about 12 hours from home. Places sure are different than Alabama when you live away. When I lived in South Florida, I hardly ever ran into a southerner or heard a southern accent. But I liked the experience.
For real. Everybody up here looks at me like I need an interpreter. My 13-year-old son (even though born in Mobile, AL) has lost his accent, and when we go to his school, he says "don't open your mouth". I just tell everyone that says anything about my accent, that's me; like it or not!! D*** bunch of Yankees!! LOL!!
No kidding! Thank God for Cracker Barrell. I can actually go into a restaurant and ask for sweet tea and not be looked at as if I'm an idiot! Although I have aquired a great group of friends alot of them (especially after I have been to AL for a week or so) still ask me to just "say something". Although, I still get told my accent is charming, but northerners still look at you as if you are slow. Yankees! LOL
Yes, thank goodness for Cracker Barrel and also we can get sweet tea at Texas Roadhouse and Famous Dave's BBQ. Other than that, either you drink it unsweet and add your sweetner packets or ask for raspberry tea.
Beth - I totally understand where you are coming from about the Cracker Barrel. When I lived in South Florida, that's where I went to get southern cooking. I learned to cook good when I moved away from home. I had to have southern food, so I had to learn to cook it.
You can't even get sweet tea at the Cracker Barrel in Missouri. I just had to get my fill at home. And they always say "we have un-sweet and you can add sugar." I always tell them NO, that's not the same, it has to be added when the tea is WARM. I think I drank gallons of it when I moved back to GA, I missed it so much. On the other hand, there's things there, however, that aren't here that I miss now.
